KAMANCELLO is comprised of Kurdish Iranian born SHAHRIYAR JAMSHIDI, kamanche, and Canadian born Cellist RAPHAEL WEINROTH-BROWNE. Shahriyar, composer and founder of the Dilan Ensemble, has devoted his artistic career to preserving and conveying the Kurdish musical heritage. He is also well known as a creative Kurdish kamanche (four stringed Spiked Fiddle) improviser. Shahriyar is a graduate of Tehran University of Art and a former artist-in-residence at Banff Centre. Raphael, multi-instrumentalist, and composer and founder of The Visit, is rapidly making a name for himself as an exceptionally versatile musician, both in Canada and internationally. A graduate of Toronto’s Glenn Gould School and a former artist-in-residence at The Banff Centre, Raphael combines polished classical technique with daring improvisation and his own compositional language, effortlessly blurring the lines between musical genres. Their performances become an instrumental conversation seamlessly weaving eastern, western, contemporary, and classical musical textures. The scope of their creations ranges from soulful and emotive to incendiary and intense, and their sound has been described as being “totally entrancing”. Having made waves with performances at Montreal’s Place des Arts for Festival du Monde Arabe, Toronto’s Tirgan Festival, and Doors Open Toronto, Kamancello have just recently released their groundbreaking self-titled debut album.
