Bird Exclusion Netting

Bird Exclusion Netting

Ontario Place is home to many bird species, including species listed as threatened or endangered in Ontario. Species classified as threatened or endangered under the provincial Species at Risk in Ontario list are afforded protection under the Endangered Species Act. This includes protection to individuals of the species as well as protection of their habitat. This legislation is applicable to Barn Swallows, which have a history of nesting within and adjacent to the pods, Cinesphere and bridge structures which are currently under repair.

In order to protect this threatened bird species as well as other birds, bird exclusion netting is being installed on the structures to prevent birds from nesting in areas which will be disrupted by construction activities. Alternative nesting sites have been made available for Barn Swallow in the habitat compensation structures which have been installed in Trillium Park.
