Eight Street Orchestra

Eight Street Orchestra

The Eighth Street Orchestra, lead by Nolan Murphy, is a traditional jazz, Dixieland, and swing jazz band, featuring some of Canada’s up and coming professional jazz and folk musicians.

In its origins, the ESO based their repertoire on music by artists like Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver. Currently, the band explores new territory, combining traditional jazz with more modern techniques and ideas, creating a unique sound and identity, described as “Louis Armstrong in the 21st Century.”

The ESO has performed in a wide variety of settings, such as jazz festivals, local markets, community and private events, and busking on the streets around Ontario. The ESO has attracted attention from audiences around the world, including members of the world-famous Sun Ra Arkestra.

Today, the Eighth Street Orchestra continues to perform historic music in iconic traditional styles, as well their own unique flavour of music, even performing modern music in traditional styles, and original compositions written in authentic historic fashions.
