The term “nova“ references the moment in the life cycle of a star when it suddenly increases brightness and then recedes from view. A metaphor for the brief, shining light of our lifetime; an hourglass typically represents fleeting time, mortality and change. Moment is a celebration of the present moment and encourages audience members to find joy in the now. Moment is simultaneously an hourglass and a star, emphasizing the convergence and pulse of the present.
Suspended on a structure, an hourglass made of light is synced with music and the wind. With illumination, sequencing, and kinetic elements, the passage of time appeals to the senses. Pixel-mapped, diffused LED light-bars create dynamic lighting patterns that respond to music. Suspended between spinning supports, a diamond of diffraction grating film creates kinetic rainbows that move and change with the wind and the proximity of the viewer. Ambient electronic music underscores the programmed lighting. The lighting sequences are based on the life cycle of a star, as a metaphor for the confluence of the present moment.
Moment creates a multi-disciplinary experience: The light-sculpture is programmed with dynamic, colourful and time-based lighting sequences; the light patterns are synced to sound; with its form of an hourglass, the rhythm of time is integral to the meaning of the piece. Visitors will experience sight, sound and touch through the lighting sequencing, music, and kinetic elements stemming from the wind.
