Urbanombre

Urbanombre is an interactive, kinetic installation that explores the distinctive quality of winter city lights. At night, it evokes the experience of moving through colourful shadows, glowing streetlights, and illuminated signs reflected across bright, snow-covered streets. The installation is built from wooden slats, creating an inviting oasis of shifting light and shadow. At its peak, two acrylic discs with repeating motifs—one stationary and one rotating—produce a moiré interference effect.

With three coloured spotlights above, the work casts vibrant shadows and undulating light patterns that ripple throughout the space. Urbanombre responds to visitors’ movement, encouraging them to speed up, slow down, or dance with the shifting shadows that mirror the pace of city life. Sensors track movement and location, adjusting the moiré accordingly: faster motion creates sharper, more intense patterns, while slower gestures generate a softer, calming effect. During the day, the moiré can be seen by looking upward through the acrylic discs against the winter sky.

At its core, Urbanombre uses light, shadow, and motion to reflect the rhythms of the urban landscape.
