piecing together

piecing together is a visual portrayal of life and community in the form of an oversized quilt; combining light and dark pieces together to create a pattern. Quilts depict stories, provide directions, and are symbols of comfort and warmth. In this quilt, log cabin blocks create a larger picture indicative of a whole life or community, with blessings, hardships, and pain present. The use of black light after dusk gives the quilt a glowing appearance, symbolizing our dreams and purpose; how we may not see it or find it achievable until our experiences amalgamate and we work together, allowing us to create something much greater, more beautiful, and more powerful than we could have dreamt. Viewers are encouraged to explore the installation both up close and from a distance, as each perspective offers a unique experience. Up close, the focus shifts to the intricacies of individual pieces, while from a distance, a cohesive pattern emerges—one that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Bekah Brown

Bekah Brown

Bekah is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans fashion, textiles, and mixed media installations. Her work delves into ancestral stories and their influence on her identity and experience, also shaped by a non-visible disability and neurodivergence. This exploration is fundamental to her understanding of both her internal world and the world we create and exist in together. Her work is a physical representation of that intersection, one that hopefully resonates and provides empathetic validation for anyone who can see their experience in her work.
